Character NAME: Rue
Canon & MEDIUM: The Hunger Games | Book
Canon PULL-POINT: Moments before her death
Character AGE: 12
Character ABILITIES: Rue has no supernatural abilities of her own, however she is very quick, agile and skilled in climbing. She is shown to be able to traverse the forest in the arena without ever touching the ground thanks to her small size, which also enables her to sneak about almost silently. Additionally she is very knowledgeable with flora thanks to her agricultural background, able to identify plants for eating and healing which enabled her to survive better than most in the wilderness.

She has a strong singing voice and is good with animals.

In her previous game experience she joined the Teen Titans and trained in combat, acrobatics, lockpicking and other ‘ninja skills’. The Katniss at that game also taught her how to use a bow and arrow.

Character HISTORY: http://thehungergames.wikia.com/wiki/Rue
Character PERSONALITY: On the surface Rue is not too different from any twelve year old girl one could imagine. She’s bright, cheerful, occasionally cheeky, a little shy and full of energy, described as always looking like a bird about to take wing in the books. She’s very fond of birds in fact, particularly mockingjay’s, she liked to sing to them at home when it was quitting time from work and considered them to be her friends. Music is her favourite thing in the whole world, whether it’s singing herself or simply listening to it. When Rue is dying her final request to Katniss is for a song, the one thing that could comfort her in her final moments. If Rue could sing for a living she would be happy as can be.

Music is one of the few true pleasures in Rue’s world, which is unpleasant in a lot of ways. Rue grew up in District 11, one of the strictest districts in its security. Her entire life she has been confined and watched by the Capitol, the powerful government of her world. This is not a happy life for a young girl like Rue. Not to mention that as she grew older there was the creeping fear that her name would be drawn to participate as tribute in the Hunger Games, something that unfortunately came true. This pervasive fear has given Rue an almost constant state of wariness and yet also resilience. Rue has seen people killed growing up, even children and is used to going hungry, starvation not being uncommon in the districts. Things that would make another child blanch are commonplace to her. Not that she takes them lightly or thinks them anything less than terrible; it’s simply an unfortunate fact of her life. Of everyone’s lives in the districts, she accepts them and tries to get by as best she can while doing the best for herself and her family.

Rue does seem to take pleasure in her work and nature however. When harvest time comes around even the children in District 11 are pulled out of school to work. Rue would work in the orchard, climbing up trees to the highest branches to pick fruit because of her small size. It was here that her fondness for mockingjay’s developed; Rue took delight in the bird’s ability to mimic any song and would sing to them herself to create elaborate music and entertain herself during the hard days labour. Being at the highest points in the orchard enabled Rue to see the signal for the end of the work day first, so she had the clever idea to teach the birds a four note song that would pass swiftly around the orchard and let every worker know it was time to quit.

Despite being the youngest and smallest tribute in the games that year, Rue did not resign herself to death. She knew her chances were slim, yes, but she displayed a sense of determination to go on as long as she could and not give in to despair. “...first they’ll have to catch me.” This was what she said in her television interview, knowing she had the skills to evade, if not go directly hand to hand with the other tributes. Before entering the arena she smartly observed the other tributes, trying to learn their strengths and weaknesses and particularly followed Katniss, who she sensed was the tribute most likely to be sympathetic to her. In the arena she exhibited great resourcefulness in survival, intelligently avoiding all direct contact with others until the night she made herself known to Katniss. Something about Katniss prompted Rue to help her and they later formed an alliance. It was Katniss’ mockingjay pin that made Rue trust her, mockingjay’s represented goodness and joy in her life.

Back at home Rue has five younger siblings and as the eldest she would do her best to look after them and keep them safe. Presumably her parents would have to be working all day and so when she was old enough Rue took responsibility and would go the extra mile to see them cared for (even risking punishment by foraging for extra food in the meadow outside the town), even going hungry herself so that her siblings had more to eat. It seems she was greatly loved by her family given the grief seen by Katniss in District 11 after her death.

She is almost certainly brave and determined, when Katniss devised the plan to destroy the Career tributes food supply Rue agreed to take the part of decoy, lighting various fires to lead the other tributes away. This was dangerous and risky, but she did it anyway, knowing that getting rid of the careers supplies was the only hope of beating them (and also showed that she enjoyed the thrill of adventure, looking forward to being able to strike back at the Career tributes). Even when she was dying she encouraged Katniss to go on, hoping that her friend who had shown her kindness would be able to survive. It would not be so bad to die knowing that Katniss would live.

Rue is a character beaten down, though not broken by the world she grew up in. She tries to take joy in everything she can while she can, knowing that the easy moments in life are always fleeting and should be relished so they can be remembered. She is clever, resourceful and determined to not give up, even in the most hopeless of situations.

Chosen WEAPON: Rue will arrive with her small slingshot from canon but choose a weapon from the armoury instead as her primary. This will take the form of a charm bracelet made of metal but with the appearance of woven wood, where the charms take the form of tools or weapons that grow to full size when activated. She will begin with three charms: a telescope, a compass and a knife and as she trains and becomes more efficient with her weapon it will produce new charms to fill her needs.
Character INVENTORY: The clothes she was wearing in Siren’s Port, a small homemade slingshot, her Teen Titans communicator and the carved wooden charm necklace that is her district token.

» PREVIOUS GAME INFORMATION ( IF APPLICABLE )
Previous GAME(s): Siren’s Pull
Previous GAME SETTING(s): Siren’s Pull is a game set on the fictional island of Siren’s Port off Canada. The island is afflicted nightly by the Darkness, which brings with it a plague of monsters that will kill anyone they find outside, the Darkness is theorised to be created by the Core, a mysterious device which also brings characters to the island and renders them unable to leave.

In addition to the Darkness the island is controlled by two corporations called SERO and AGI who compete over control of the city and the people who reside there. Characters are known as Newcomers and can choose to affiliate themselves with either company or remain neutral as they struggle to get by in a strange city and world where many of the citizens resent their presence. The Core also grants characters powers, if they did not possess them before.

Previous GAME CR: Characters Rue had significant CR with in Siren’s Pull are: Katniss, Peeta and Primrose from The Hunger Games, Jesse Pinkman from Breaking Bad, Yosuke Hanamura from Persona 4, Raphael from Supernatural, Lisbeth from The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, Iroh from Avatar: the Last Airbender, Fluttershy from My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic, Red Robin ‘Tim Drake’ from DC comics, kid Loki from Marvel comics, Aslan from The Chronicles of Narnia, young Gohan from Dragonball Z, Hiccup and Toothless from How to Train Your Dragon, Death of the Endless from Sandman.

Your character's DEVELOPMENT: Siren’s Pull gave Rue something she never expected to have, life, a real comfortable, happy life. Even though she was separated from home and family she was alive and she knew they would be too. Assured by others that time would not pass where she came from Rue decided to seize this new world as her own, embracing it completely and utterly. Unlike most everyone else there she did not wish to ever leave. Leaving the Port became her greatest fear because she knew without being explicitly told that returning to the world of Panem would mean her death. After her own arrival Peeta and Katniss also came and their interactions then and later clued Rue into her future. It was a startling feeling to come to terms with not the possibility of death but the certainty of it.

However Rue kept her knowledge a secret from her friends, she did not wish to hurt Katniss or Peeta or anyone by confronting them with it, if they felt more comfortable believing her oblivious then so she would pretend so. She kept quiet and determinedly set out to enjoy the new lease on life she had been given. It was a gift she had no intention of squandering.

Rue’s arrival in the Port was what set the tone for her time there. Scared, worried that this was a new trick of the games she initially fled until Jesse Pinkman coaxed her out and saw her to safety, ordering her food (Chinese, which became her favourite) and giving her money so that she would not have to work for a living as she was initially prepared to. He only asked that in exchange she would go to school and enjoy normal kid stuff, this she agreed to and carried out with enthusiasm.

She lived with Peeta and Katniss, and Prim when she arrived. Her days were filled with school, play, learning to shoot with Katniss and bake with Peeta as well as visiting Jesse (who became like a surrogate father/guardian figure to her) frequently. She also had singing lessons with Aslan, who was a mentor and guiding influence to her in times when she felt lost or sad. At Halloween when trying on a ghost costume she discovered that the Core had given her the power of flight, much to her delight.

Rue was not idle though. She was approached by Tim Drake, introducing himself as Red Robin and was invited to join the Teen Titan’s in Port. The possibility to help others and learn to defend herself was not one Rue could pass up, she took on the moniker of Songbird and was dedicated to the team, training and crime fighting whenever she could successfully sneak out to do so. This was another secret she kept from her friends but one she felt was justified, as they might have tried to stop her if they knew and Rue did not want to feel helpless, even though she knew they would have good intentions in doing so.

In the summer she was the instigator and leader in an expedition of children and teens to search for hidden treasure and the mystery of a creature living in one of the caves of the Port. Everyone came out alright, mostly, except for some cuts and bruises. They discovered the secret of the creature that lived there and defended it from thieves, making them essentially heroes!

During her time in Siren’s Port, almost ten months, she has become more mature and adult as well as pro-active in achieving her goals. She is alive when she should be dead and ready to make the most of it and even being pulled into yet another new world will not get in the way of that.
